Partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer

London, United Kingdom

About Me

I help businesses - mainly in the FMCG, retail, leisure and healthcare sectors - handle commercial disputes, consumer law issues and product liability litigation.

I also help them manage regulatory risks, from advising on product safety and recall to dealing with the approvals needed for a new brand introduction and the risks associated with their marketing claims.

My practice is ranked in Tier 1 in both Legal 500 and Chambers. Legal 500 (2015) says that I am "noted for [my] regulatory know how" and the 2016 edition of Chambers says: "Andrew Austin is a rising talent in product and general commercial liability matters covering both regulatory and litigious aspects. Sources say that he 'offers invaluable support. He is excellent, and always there when you need him. Very articulate, measured and works extremely well under pressure.'"

Having worked in New York, Paris and London during my career at Freshfields, I see myself as having a genuinely international outlook. I particularly enjoy helping US clients navigate the European regulatory and litigation environment. I have a lot of experience in working with other Freshfields network offices and trusted external counsel to coordinate the defence of multi-jurisdictional product liability litigation and regulatory advocacy campaigns.

I joined Freshfields in 1999 and became a partner in 2011. I became our Trainee Recruitment Partner in June 2014. I am proud to form part of the firm's global diversity team and to act as sponsor of its LGBT network group, Halo.

Specialties: Product regulation, food law, consumer law, marketing law, product liability defence, mass torts defence, risk management, regulatory advocacy and engagement, product recall, anti-bribery and corruption, emerging technologies, nanotechnology
